The 13th Annual Great Burke Mountain Pumpkin Giveaway!

Every October, one of my favourite traditions rolls around: my annual Great Burke Mountain Pumpkin Giveaway.

This year marks the 13th annual event, and on Sunday, October 18th from 12–3pm, we’ll once again be taking over Galloway Park with pumpkins, treats, face painting and a costume contest for the little ones.

I look forward to this event every single year. Yes, it’s fun to see hundreds of pumpkins piled up in the park, and I love seeing all the kids arrive in costume, but for me, it has always been about something bigger: community.

When I moved to Burke Mountain in 2009, this neighbourhood looked very different. It was still a very young community, with new streets, new homes and new neighbours arriving all the time. Unlike moving into an established neighbourhood with decades of traditions already in place, most of us were starting from scratch. We had beautiful new homes, but we were still figuring out what it meant to be a real community. I loved being part of helping that happen.

Over the years, I have organized epic Burke Mountain Easter Egg Hunts, hosted neighbourhood block parties, had countless conversations in parks and on sidewalks, and, of course, created the Burke Mountain Community Facebook page, which has grown to more than 9,000 members and still going strong. Somewhere along the way, the Pumpkin Giveaway became one of those traditions too.

Thirteen years later, I think it’s pretty special that families now know October on Burke Mountain means pumpkins at Galloway Park. Some of the little ones who came to our earliest events aren't so little anymore! Every year I see familiar faces, past and current clients, neighbours I’ve known for years, and plenty of new families who are just beginning their own Burke Mountain story.

Real estate has given me the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people in this community. Being able to give something back, create a reason for people to come together, and hopefully add a little bit to what makes this neighbourhood feel special is something I’m incredibly proud of.
